Matariki on Main Street

June / July

Matariki (literal meaning: the ‘eyes of god’ or ‘little eyes’) is the Maori name for the cluster of stars known as Pleiades. The ascent of Matariki in late May or June signals the change of season and heralds the start of the Maori New Year.

Matariki on Main Street is an evening of fun activities and entertainment – kapa haka, drummers, fire-eaters, stilt-walkers, a local band, food trucks and more. Main Street will be closed between Aotaki St and Matene St from 5pm-10pm, with activities from 6pm. Bring the kids and a warm jacket. Put it in the diary now!
